On the road again!

September 9, 2014
Making like a trio of red-headed strangers, we are on the road again once more!

Starting out, we spent a warm and wet night in Magnolia Springs – perfect for the Road Toad, not so much for my two-legged buddies. We had to run the air conditioner, a rarity of events, though occasionally necessary. We found the park (what we saw of it!) little changed from our first visit a couple of years ago.  There may have been a bit more water in the lake, this time, but we didn’t get a chance to wander down to the nature walk, so I’m not too sure.  At any rate, we didn’t see any of  my sworn enemies of the Allygator persuasion.

We’re now spending our last day encamped at Standing Indian Campground –  in Nantahala National Forest near Franklin, North Carolina.  True to our luck of late, it rained as we arrived, and Carlos got really wet setting up.  No electric or water hookups for luxury here.  We filled our water tank from a shared communal spigot, and are trying our luck with a solar panel – quite a challenge with tall trees and clouds!

The campground itself is really quite to our liking.  There are five loops, with a total of 80 something sites among them.  Nearly all are well separated – most are heavily shaded.  A handful of sites in two (maybe three?) loops can be reserved – the remainder are all walk ins.  Only one of the reservable sites is open enough for the solar panel, though there are about a half dozen walk-ins that would work as well.   So far, it’s been incredibly quiet. Carlos and Minkie say that’s because school is in, so only the old fogies are camping. I’m good with that.

Weather permitting, we hope to get a hike in before we leave for our next stop.  This is definitely a keeper of a place, and I can’t wait to see what the hiking brings!
